 Preface

Tibetan IS a rich language. One of the unique features of which are the honorific words that are commonly used during conversations. And yet I have never seen any book that was written on this subject in the absence of which there is the danger of forgetting these words in the long run. And today the need for such a record of work is more urgently felt for the very reason that children are getting more and more exposed to other languages while they are becoming less and less familiar with their own mother tongue as a result of which one day they may forget everything. Thinking from this point of view I have the confidence that this small book of mine will serve a big purpose for the preservation of Tibetan language.

The first manuscript was prepared in July 1989 which I serialized in Denjong Jhamata, the paper I edit. To my surprise, it drew a good response from the readers, many among whom were themselves 1earned scholars. This was a big encouragement for me. But without fund the work remained unpublished.

Last year being the International Year of Tibet, I again took out the manuscript and wrote and rewrote the entire work from the very beginning arranging the words in a proper alphabetical order, the process of which had really squeezed a lot of time and sweat out of me. But without a publisher the work again remained unpublished.

Finally, I must express my sincere thanks to all the executive members of the eleventh committee of Tibetan Rangtsen Tshogchung, Gangtok, for their kind favour of publishing this book without whose help it would have never seen the light of publication. It is really a source of great encouragement for the author to think that though they are not a publishing house they at once came forward to publish the work at a time when others, even some institutes which do publishing works, showered my work with praises but politely declined to offer any help in publishing it. I will always remain indebted to my publishers for their valuable cooperation which must remain as a true example for all who talk about the preservation of culture.

Now I have the confidence to feel that whatever time and labour that I had spent on this project have not gone wasted and am sure that their assistance and my efforts will bear fruits.
