36th Tibetan Terminology Standardising Board Meeting Finalises Over 600 Standard Terms

News

Dharamshala: Over 600 Tibetan terms were standardised by the Department of Education’s Terminology Desk (CTA) during its 36th High-Level Standardising Board meeting, which was held from 11 to 15 March 2024.

During the five-day meeting, the board debated and standardised Tibetan terminology for its application in education, law, politics, economics, arithmetic, environment, science, technology, botany, medicine, and astronomy.

In view of the need to preserve and promote the Tibetan language and to unify the terminology of the various disciplines of modern education, the Terminology Desk has published 16 sets of standardised Tibetan-English Dictionaries, several pictorial books, a Tibetan terminology website and word-searching Apps since its inception in 2006 under the 13th Kashag. In addition, the Desk also carried out a Tibetan terminology awareness campaign on every lhakar (white Wednesday) through Tibet TV, introducing standardised terms.

The Desk further distributes its publications to the departments of CTA, Tibetan schools, monasteries, libraries, and governmental and non-governmental organisations for utilisation. At the same time, the standardised Tibetan terms were also uploaded to social media platforms, websites, and Apps.
