Dharamshala:The Department of Education organised a workshop on supporting children with speech and language difficulties for the teachers of Gangkyi Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen school on 17 November and later for parents on 21November, which attracted 43 parents. The session began with a warm welcome by Chief Counsellor Jamyang Wangyal, followed by a presentation of DoE intern Tenzin Kalden, a Speech and Language Pathologist. Kalden has provided comprehensive insights into various speech sound disorders and language disorders. Kalden’s presentation covered a range of topics, including the characteristics and types of speech sound disorders and language disorders. The parents were informed about the potential causes of these disorders, such as genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and neurodevelopment disabilities.
Furthermore, Kalden highlighted the major areas of developmental disabilities associated with speech and language disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and intellectual disabilities. She emphasised the importance of early identification and intervention in addressing these conditions and provided parents with practical strategies to support their child’s communication development.
The workshop concluded with a focus on simple techniques that parents can implement at home to facilitate their child’s speech and language skills. The session was well-received by the parents, who actively participated in the discussion and asked questions to clarify their concerns.
