Awareness Programs on Tibetan Terminology at Tibetan Settlements in Central India

Dharamshala: From 16 to 26 September 2024, the Terminology Section of the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, conducted series of terminology awareness programs in Tibetan settlements located in Central India, namely Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement in Odisha, Phendeyling Tibetan Settlement in Mainpat, and Norgeyling Tibetan Settlement in Bhandara.

On 19 September, a team of two staff members from the Terminology Section, consisting of Ngawang Tenzin and Tsering Dhondup, conducted the awareness program for teachers and students of Sambhota Tibetan School in Mainpat in the morning and then for residents of Mainpat Phendeyling Tibetan Settlement later that afternoon.

Similarly, the duo conducted awareness program for the teachers and students of Sambhota Tibetan School in Godangaon on 20 September, followed by a similar campaign for the residents of Norgyeling Tibetan Settlement in Bhandara on the subsequent day.

On the morning of 23 September, they conducted a session for the residents of Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement in Odisha, and subsequently met with teachers and students of Sambhota School in Chandragiri.

During these series of sessions, Ngawang Tenzin and Tsering Dhondup thoroughly explained through multimedia presentations the purpose of establishing the Terminology Section, the working methodology of the Terminology Section, and its projects implemented thus far, the process of terminology standardisation and the importance of unifying the terms and the ways in which they are to be used.

The sessions included interactive Q&A discussions with teachers, students, and community members, which successfully enhanced understanding about terminology standardisation processes. During these programs, participants showed great interest and provided both applause for the Terminology Section’s work and constructive feedback for improvement.
