Education Kalon Inaugurates Science Laboratory at TCV Chauntra

Dharamshala: Kalon Tharlam Dolma Changra (Minister) of the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), attended the inauguration ceremony of the Science Lab Improvement Project at Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) School in Chauntra as the Chief Guest on 22 April 2026.

Upon her arrival, the Kalon was warmly received by Principal Passang Tsering, Headmistress Tenzin Dolma, and Assistant Headmaster Tenzin Dhondup. Also present during visit were TCV head office Education Director Nawang Lhamo, Genereal Secretary cum project officer Kalsang Phuntsok along with representatives from Bir Dege Tibetan Settlement and Bir Boetsog Tibetan Settlement were also present.

Following the reception, the Kalon inspected the school campus and its facilities before proceeding to the school auditorium to address the students.

The programme in the auditorium commenced with opening remarks by the school Principal, Passang Tsering, who welcomed the Chief Guest and highlighted the relevance of the Science Lab Improvement Project in enhancing practical learning among students. He also expressed gratitude on behalf of the entire school to the DoE for extending assistance the improved the facilities. This was followed by the presentation of the school’s annual summary report.

Education Kalon Tharlam Dolma then addressed the students in the hall, emphasising the visionary leadership of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. She reminded students not to forget that their time in exile is temporary and urged them to make meaningful use of educational opportunities while preserving their identity and values.

She further noted that the school’s conducive environment reflects the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, supported by the Government and people of India as well as international assistance. Emphasising that education is both a right and a responsibility, she encouraged students to cultivate cooperation, harmony, and strong moral values.

Highlighting the situation inside Tibet, the Education Kalon stressed that Tibetans in exile have a greater responsibility to preserve their language and culture. She encouraged students to approach their learning with creativity and to support one another through the sharing of knowledge for mutual growth and improvement.

Following lunch, the Education Kalon inaugurated the Science Laboratory through a ribbon-cutting ceremony under the Science Laboratory Improvement Project, implemented by the Department of Education since 2023 with support from U.S. funding. The laboratory at TCV Chauntra was completed at a cost of INR 690,636, aimed at strengthening science education facilities in Tibetan schools.

The laboratory has been equipped with modern scientific instruments, including microscopes, projectors, refrigeration units, water and air systems, gas pipeline installations, fire safety measures, and other essential facilities.

The Kalon subsequently held a interaction with the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school. Addressing the gathering, the Education Kalon encouraged them to follow the “Three Ds”—Decide, Delegate, and Deliver—and reminded them of their responsibility in shaping the future and success of their students.

Education Kalon also urged the staff to foster a positive and inclusive school environment that promotes both academic excellence and personal growth, noting that the collective efforts of teachers play a vital role in shaping the overall character of the institution. She emphasised that with proper guidance, students can grow into responsible contributors to society, bringing pride and fulfilment to their teachers.

In conclusion, the Kalon shared insights from her early career as a teacher and later as a principal, drawing from her experiences to encourage and inspire the staff. She emphasised the importance of dedication, patience, and a strong sense of responsibility in nurturing students and building a supportive learning environment.

Throughout the visit, the Kalon was accompanied by DoE officials, including Under Secretary and Science and Mathematics Education Officer Dorjee Wangdue and Under Secretary Tenzin Kunchok.
