Training on Administration of Intelligence Test to Tibetan School Guidance Counselors

The Administrators’ training on Indian Child Intelligence Test organized by the Department of Education CTA concluded successfully on April 26, 2013. The Chief Guest for the Valedictory function was Mr. Tsewang Yeshi la, the Executive Director of Tibetan Children’s Village. The valedictory function was attended by other distinguished dignitaries from Tibetan Children’s Village Head Office and Dr. (Ms.) Tsering Yankey (Monitoring and Evaluation Director) from Tibet Fund.

Ms. Donkar Wangmo, Chief Counselor, Department of Education gave the welcome speech and did a presentation of the training report. She said, “It is for the first time that Department of Education has organized training on specific psychological test to the Tibetan School Guidance Counselors.” In her presentation, she said that the training was for five days from April 22 – 26, 2013. During the training, the participants learned the Administration, Interpretation, Data Analysis and Report Writing of Indian Child Intelligence Test (ICIT) which is an adaptation of a Dutch Intelligence Test (RAKIT).  The participants not only saw the demonstration of the Test but also conducted the test on students called from Tibetan Children’s Village who are in the age group of 4 yrs to 12 years. This Test will help identification of strengths and weaknesses of the students as early as 4 yrs and thereby provide input to improve the academic performance of the student.

She also said that the Department of Education will continue to hold workshops to follow up the training.

She, on behalf of the Department of Education, CTA expressed heartfelt gratitude to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Tibet Fund for funding the training and ICIT Kits. Each participant was given the ICIT kit to take back to their schools for future use.

The training was conducted by Dr. Analpa Paranjpe, PhD, Director of Srujan Psychoeducational Consultancy, Pune.  Dr. Analpa is an accredited trainer of ICIT and has long experience of conducting the test. Dr. Analpa spoke on her personal experience with the participants during this training and shared her thoughts on the need for the School Guidance Counselors to get more exposures related to their work.

Mr. Tsewang Yeshi la, Executive Director. The Chief Guest stressed that through such test if we could help the academically challenged students, then, the administration is ready to support the School Counselors to create the conducive environment at the school to improve the performance of the academically weaker students.

There were total of 14 participants and of which 9 were from Tibetan Children’s Village, three from Department of Education and one each from Tibetan Homes Foundation and Snow Lion Foundation, Nepal.

Ms. Tenzin Paldon, Inclusive Education Officer (DOE) proposed the vote of thanks. This training and the ICIT Kits was funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Tibet Fund.
