Tenzin Chokyi of Tibetan Homes Foundation is the first recipient of the prestigious Sikyong Scholarship, rolled out last year by the Central Tibetan Administration. She will be the first Tibetan student to score more than 95% in the All India Senior School Certificate Examination. Sikyong Scholarship was introduced as an incentive for our students to work harder and perform better in their studies.
The Department of Education (DoE) would like to heartily congratulate her for the remarkable achievement.
Tenzin Chokyi was commended in person by Sikyong / Education Kalon Dr. Lobsang Sangay at his office. “I am very happy that the Sikyong Scholarship has found its first recepient. I sincerely congratulate Tenzin Chokyi for her accomplishment making all the Tibetans feel very proud. Hope she will be the first of the many students to excel in studies and receive the Sikyong Scholarship.” Sikyong said.
DoE’s merit-based scholarship offers higher scholarships for higher percentage scored in Board Exams. This year 1616 Tibetan students appeared for All India Senior Secondary Certificate Examination from 16 Tibetan Schools. The overall pass percentage of Tibetan schools is 87.3 which are 5 percent higher than All India aggregate of 82.10%.
We are very happy to share that 188 (52%) students have scored 70% and above in the Science stream; and 157 (14%) students obtained 75% and above in Arts & Commerce streams. This is a stunning surge of high scorers from 242 Tibetan students in 2012 to 345 in 2013.
In addition to the scholarships offered by the DoE, merit-based scholarships are confirmed to be provided by Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV), Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF), Mussoorie and other organizations.
The following students are nominated for Gadhen Phodrang Student Merit Award for 2013. Three toppers from each stream will receive cash award of Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
