Secretary Jigme Namgyal Presides Over Inaugural Ceremony of Leadership Workshop for School Prefects & Captains as Chief Guest

Dharamshala: As Tibetan schools in India commence their summer break, the Department of Education (DoE) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) kicked off a six-day leadership workshop for school prefects and captains earlier this morning. The opening ceremony was held at the Administrative Training Centre.

A total of 38 student representatives from 13 different Tibetan schools across India are participating in the workshop, accompanied by 13 teacher-guides from their respective schools. The workshop aims to empower student leaders with essential leadership qualities and foster a deeper sense of responsibility, identity, and service.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks by Additional Secretary Tenzin Dorjee from the Academic Section of the Department of Education, who introduced the objectives and structure of the six-day leadership workshop. In his address, he welcomed the student participants and accompanying teachers, noting that while the Department traditionally organises leadership workshops during the winter break, this year it was rescheduled to summer. The inaugural session was presided over by Education Secretary Jigme Namgyal, who attended as the chief guest.

As the chief guest in his keynote address, Secretary Jigme Namgyal emphasised the significance of cultivating visionary leadership and effective communication skills among student leaders. He encouraged the participants to take pride in their language and cultural heritage while also developing discipline, time management, and a sense of responsibility as the future custodians of the Tibetan community.

Highlighting the intent behind such workshops, the Secretary stated, “Leadership is not only about holding a title; it is about taking initiative, making the right decisions, and setting a positive example for others. This workshop is an opportunity for you to discover your strength and understand your responsibilities as student leaders.”

“You all represent the younger generation and are the future torchbearers of Tibetan leadership. As Tibetan youth, your role in preserving our identity and leading your peers is vital,” he said. He further encouraged the students to apply the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop in their respective schools upon their return.

“Whatever you learn here should not remain confined to this room. You must return to your schools with renewed confidence and lead by example. You must strive to create a positive influence in your school community.” Secretary Jigme Namgyal concluded his address.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Under Secretary Dorjee Wangdue from the department’s academic section. The workshop was funded by Global Affairs Canada through Alinea International.

Throughout this leadership workshop, the participants will explore various topics, including the importance of Tibetan language and culture, cyber safety & security, gender equality in schools, the importance of Tibet’s environment, learning & leadership, introduction to CTA, visit to CTA departments, educational visits to the Tibet Museum and the the Dalai Lama Library and Archives, communications skills for leaders, conflict resolution and leadership.
