Dharamshala: The Terminology Section of the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, held a discussion meeting on 8 January 2026 at the department’s conference hall with the aim of promoting uniform usage of standardised terminology across all Tibetan media.
Among the participants includes Kalsang Jinpa, President of the Association of Tibetan Journalists; Yeshi Kundak, Chief Editor of bod.asia, along with his colleagues Lobsang Dolkar and Tenzin Choekyi; Tenzin Paljor, news editor for the Tibetan Parliament in Exile (TPiE); Editorial director of Tibet Times and Parliamentarian Pema Tso; Tenzin Paldon, Editor-in-Chief of Voice of Tibet (VoT), along with Ngawang Jangchup; Editorial Lobsang Gyatso of Tibet Express; Yangchen Dolma, Managing Editor of The Tibet Post; Journalist Tenzin Nyidron from Phayul and Joint Secretary Urgyen Tenzin, Head of the Terminology Section, along with the staff members of the section.
The group exchanged views on standardising and implementing Tibetan terminology in general, with a focus on scientific and modern technical terms requiring translation.
The Department of Education established the Terminology Section to preserve traditional terms and to standardise newly emerging Tibetan terminology.
To date, the section has created and standardised numerous terms across various subjects to meet contemporary needs. It has also worked to disseminate these terms within the community to date.
Tibetan-language news media serve as a primary gateway for terminological standardisation. Recognising this, the Department’s Terminology Section invited Tibetan journalists—coordinated through Kalsang Jinpa, President of the Association of Tibetan Journalists—to a discussion in the Department’s conference hall.
The Head of the Terminology Section introduced the topic via PowerPoint Presentation, covering the importance of terminology, the standardisation process, public awareness programmes, and future plans. Journalists then raised concerns about the section’s methods and reached consensus on using the section’s standardised terms, paving the way for future collaboration.
