Dharamshala: The Terminology Section of the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration, has successfully overseen the establishment of new Tibetan Terminology Committees across seven additional Tibetan schools, further strengthening the preservation and modernisation of the Tibetan language within the student community.
Following a specialised outreach initiative by the Terminology Section targeting schools without pre-existing committees, seven institutions joined the programme this year. The newly joined schools include: Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF) Rajpur and Dekyiling branches; Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society (STSS) Herbertpur, Kalimpong, and Tenzingang; and Sera Jey Secondary School and Sera Mey Thoesam School.
On the afternoon of 31 March 2026, the Terminology Section hosted a virtual orientation via Google Meet for the lead teachers of these newly formed committees. During the session, officials provided a comprehensive introduction to the Department’s standardisation processes and shared strategic guidelines on how to effectively promulgate new terminology among students. The meeting also served as a platform for an interactive Q&A session, allowing educators to discuss implementation challenges and share pedagogical insights.
This effort forms part of a long-term programme to disseminate the terms standardised by CTA’s Tibetan Terminology Standardising Board during its three annual meetings, ensuring that modern standardised terms are not merely archived but are actively ‘learned, used, and disseminated’ by Tibetan children.
Since its inception, the project has seen steady growth: 10 schools joined in 2024, followed by another 10 in 2025, and 7 new schools in 2026.
To date, a total of 27 Tibetan schools have established dedicated terminology committees. Over the past two years, these committees have been instrumental in organising weekly and monthly activities that integrate new vocabulary into the daily lives of students.
To sustain these efforts, the Department of Education continues to provide an annual financial grant of INR 7,000 to each participating school to cover the costs of terminology-related activities and promotional materials.
