Education Secretary Jigme Namgyal Visits Tenzingang Tibetan Settlement and Sambhota School to Address Students and Staff

Tenzingang: In order to strengthen grassroots education and review academic standards, the Education Secretary of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Jigme Namgyal, made an official visit to Tenzingang Tibetan Settlement from 27 to 29 April 2026.

The Secretary arrived Tenzingang in the afternoon of 27 April and was warmly welcomed with a traditional reception. He was received by the Tenzingang Settlement Officer, Rabten Tsering, and the Headmaster of Sambhota Tibetan School Tenzingang, Tenzin Norsang. The President of the Local Tibetan Freedom Movement, regional representatives, and the presidents of the Tibetan Youth Congress and Women’s Association were also present to welcome him.

The next morning, Secretary Jigme Namgyal began his visit to Sambhota Tibetan School Tenzingang. After observing the morning assembly and student activities, he praised the students and staff for their active participation. In his speech, he stressed the importance of preserving the Tibetan language. He compared the freedom of students in exile with the difficult situation in Tibet, where many children are sent to boarding schools and are not allowed to learn their mother tongue. He encouraged students to take pride in their language and to actively participate in class by asking questions.

He also spoke about modern challenges and warned students about excessive use of mobile phones. Referring to the Sakya Legshey, he said that “one cannot gain knowledge by only seeking comfort.” He explained that too much screen time can harm health and affect future success. He advised students to work hard now for a better and respectful future.

While addressing the teachers, Secretary Jigme Namgyal said that teachers are important role models. He mentioned that students often trust their teachers greatly, so teachers must maintain good professional and personal conduct. He stressed that punctuality and dedication are very important, and teachers should attend assemblies and classes on time.

The visit concluded with a joint meeting with the school administration and the Parent-Teacher Association. The Secretary said that “seeing once is better than hearing a hundred times,” and expressed his satisfaction at witnessing the school’s progress firsthand. He reminded everyone that education is a shared responsibility between schools and parents and encouraged parents to support reading habits at home. The school inspection concluded at 6:30 PM.

After visiting the Settlement Office, the local Tibetan cooperative society, and the health clinic on 29 April, the Secretary departed for Delhi.
