The Department of Education has organized Early Grade Reading Workshop for Primary Teachers at TCV Suja from 25th May to 29th May 2016. It was participated by 19 participants under the school administration of Tibetan Children Village (TCV) Dharamsala out of which 11 teachers from TCV Suja School and 8 teachers from TCV Chauntra School. Early Grade Reading (EGR) workshops so far conducted by the Department of Education, CTA are considered to be most successful and prominent workshops to establish reading culture in the Tibetan society.
The Department of Education initiated the Early Grade Reading Project since 2014 based on the recommendations Education Advisory Committee meeting held in June 2013. Our aim is to train all the primary teachers of Tibetan schools in India which come under the different school administrations such CTSA, STSS, THF, TCV and etc. with a hope to modernize their pedagogy of language and inculcate reading as an important aspect of learning which will enhance development of early child’s literacy.
We expect that our teachers will recognize reading as an independent aspect of learning in primary school and it is not limited to understanding to one or two languages. In addition, we are hoping that our teachers are committed to develop reading habits among every Tibetan child.
Till the date, the Department of Education conducted EGR workshops for 18 batches of teachers where 299 primary teachers participated. Based on the feedbacks of the participants, it was found that the EGR workshops were very helpful and teachers have been benefited from them. It was suggested by the teachers that such workshops should be organised at least for a twice in a year.
Dr. Latika Gupta and Prof Krishna Kumar were the resource persons for all the EGR workshops conducted by DoE and both of them are faculty members of Department of Education, Delhi University. In addition, Prof. Kumar is an internationally renowned academician and recipient of Padma Shree Award from the President of India. He is known for his writings in the area of language and sociology of education.
The EGR workshop conducted at TCV Suja was also being funded by The USAID through The Tibet fund.
