Dharamshala: Gyurmey Lhamo, a Sherig Scholarship recipient and graduate of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences in Mangaluru, Karnataka, has been awarded the Gold Medal for Academic Excellence in recognition of her outstanding performance in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme. She received the medal during the university’s convocation ceremony held on 7 November 2025.
Hailing from Nangchen Chauntra Tibetan Settlement, Himachal Pradesh, Gyurmey completed her schooling at Sambhota Tibetan Schools in Chauntra and Mundgod. Her remarkable achievement reflects years of dedication, discipline, and perseverance.
Calling the honour an “emotional and unforgettable moment,” Gyurmey said it reaffirmed her hard work and commitment. She credited her success to time management, consistency, and the unwavering support of her family, teachers, and mentors.
She also expressed gratitude to the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration, for supporting her studies through the Sherig Scholarship Programme. Her four-year nursing course was funded by Danida, Denmark, under the DoE scholarship.
Inspired by the compassion and service at the heart of nursing, Gyurmey now aspires to pursue a master’s degree to broaden her knowledge and contribute more effectively to the Tibetan community upon her return.
In her message to young Tibetans, she emphasised sincerity, discipline, and pride in one’s identity. “Pursue nursing or any field with genuine passion and commitment. Nursing is a profession grounded in hard work, compassion, responsibility, and community service.”
Gyurmey dedicated her success to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, her family, her teachers at Sambhota Tibetan Schools, and the Department of Education.
The Department of Education extended heartfelt congratulations to Gyurmey Lhamo and wished for her continued success in all her future endeavours.
