North America: On 15 November 2025, the Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration gave online training to teachers from Tibetan weekend schools in North America. The training focused on improving methods for teaching the Tibetan language. It was organised as per the resolution from the 23rd Annual Conference of the North American Tibetan Association, following a request from the Office of Tibet in Washington D.C.
There are 36 Tibetan community associations in North America, and 24 of them run weekend schools. A total of 52 teachers from pre-primary and lower primary levels from Southern California, Santa Fe, Seattle, Northern California, Portland, Vancouver BC, Utah, Colorado, Minnesota, Vancouver Island, and Calgary joined the training.
The main trainer was Pasang Tsering, a seasoned Tibetan language teacher from Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School. Other participants in the webinar included Education Secretary Jigme Namgyal, Representative Dr Namgyal Choedup, Department of Education’s textbook section head Gedun Dhonyoe, and Tibetan Liaison Officer Kunga Tashi.
Before the training began, the Education Secretary and the Representative spoke briefly about why weekend schools are important and what the Department expects from the teachers.
During the session, trainer Pasang Tsering shared practical methods on topics such as: the mindset teachers should have, how to teach letters and reading skills, how to combine reading and writing, how to use listening, speaking, reading, and writing in lessons, and how to use children’s stories to teach language.
After the session, many teachers shared that the training was very helpful. The Tibetan Liaison Officer and the Textbook Section’s head thanked the teachers for their dedication to Tibetan children.
