Dharamshala: A series of awareness programmes on Secular Ethics was organised by the Education Council of the Department of Education (CTA) for Tibetan college students in India, covering Mangalore, Mysore, Bengaluru, and Delhi.
The sessions, conducted by Secular Ethics mentor Geshe Lharampa Yeshi Gyaltsen, began on 8 November 2025 in Mangalore, followed by a session in Mysore the next day. On 11 and 12 November, additional Secular Ethics sessions were held at the Tibetan Youth Hostels in Bengaluru and Delhi, respectively.
A total of 237 students and 6 staff members attended the sessions, which focused on the importance of incorporating secular ethics in today’s fast-paced and digital world. Addressing rising challenges such as depression, anxiety, and hopelessness among youth amidst growing competition, egocentrism, pride, greed, and jealousy, the programme aimed to mitigate these negative influences in line with Buddhist philosophical principles, which are increasingly recognised as effective solutions.
During the awareness talks, Geshe Lharampa Yeshi Gyaltsen emphasised unity, empathy, and responsibility as the foundations of ethical living. He explained that through these practices, individuals can cultivate self-contentment, societal harmony, and global prosperity—key elements for a meaningful life and collective happiness. He elaborated that a sense of unity fosters equality, fairness, and togetherness, building a society free from discrimination and suppression. Through empathy, interpersonal relationships, solidarity, and mutual support are strengthened. For personal development, social wellbeing, and global awareness—particularly regarding climate change—he underscored the importance of embracing responsible actions. In essence, he conveyed that these principles encourage individuals to reflect on the consequences of their actions to better navigate life’s challenges.
The participating students responded positively to the sessions and actively engaged in the Q&A discussions.
