Dharamshala: The Terminology Section of the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, held a virtual conference on 11 April 2025 with members of 20 school terminology committees to reflect on past undertakings and discuss future initiatives of the Terminology Section.
The meeting was presided over by Joint Secretary Urgyen Tenzin, Head of the Terminology Section, who gave a presentation outlining the section’s work and the dissemination of standardised terms within the community to date.
Following the presentation, Committees Coordinator Tsering Dhondup briefed participants on the section’s activities and elaborated on the financial support provided by the Department of Education for this initiative. Each participating member also presented their committee’s reports and shared experiences, allowing for the exchange of insights and discussions on future approaches.
In 2024, the Department of Education launched a project to establish student terminology committees in Tibetan schools in exile. The aim was to integrate contemporary terminology standardised by the Tibetan Terminology Standardisation Board into the education system through active learning, usage, and dissemination. Thus far, ten Tibetan schools: Upper TCV Dharamshala, Selakui TCV, Bylakuppe TCV, THS Mussoorie, STS Mussoorie, STS Chandragiri, STS Darjeeling, STS Dholanji, STS Mundgod, and STS Bylakuppe, have successfully formed student terminology committees. These initiatives have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from school-level committees.
Building on this momentum, the Department plans to establish an additional ten student terminology committees in the following Tibetan schools: Ladakh TCV, Suja TCV, Gopalpur TCV, Chauntra TCV, Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School, STS Miao, STS CVP Bylakuppe, STS Gurupura, STS Kollegal, and Loseling School, all of which promptly agreed to this proposal.
To support these efforts financially, the Danish organisation DANIDA, based in Denmark, provided ₹4,000 to each committee last year through the Department of Education. This year, in response to a request for increased support, DANIDA has agreed to raise the funding to ₹7,000 per school terminology committee.
