Education Kalon Tharlam Dolma Changra Graces the 19th Founding Anniversary of Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School

Dharamshala: The Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen (Model) School marked its 19th anniversary on October 10, 2024 celebrating nearly two decades of educating Tibetan children through a holistic learning approach, guided by the Basic Education Policy of the Tibetan exiles.

The celebration was graced by Education Kalon (Minister) Tharlam Dolma Changra of the Department of Education (DoE). Kalon Tharlam Dolma hailed the event as a significant milestone, noting that it represents the successful realisation of the Central Tibetan Administration’s vision, rooted in the profound teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the preservation of Tibetan heritage.

In her speech, Kalon Tharlam Dolma expressed deep gratitude to the teachers, staff, and parents for their unwavering support over the years. Education Kalon specifically commended the dedication of teachers and staff who have continued their work despite financial challenges, acknowledging that many of them have received minimal salaries while still striving to shape the future of the younger generation.

The Kalon pointed out the disparities in respect and remuneration between kindergarten/primary school teachers and their senior counterparts, stressing that early childhood educators are often undervalued. Kalon Tharlam emphasised, “Kindergarten and primary teachers are doing the hardest work, as they lay the foundation for the children’s future, yet they receive less recognition and compensation. We should be giving them more respect and better pay.”

Furthermore, the Kalon encouraged parents to play an active role in their children’s education and reminded them of their influence on their children’s behaviour. Citing instances where children’s conduct at school was directly affected by their home environment, she emphasised that both teachers and parents share the responsibility of nurturing children into responsible adults. She added that the role of parents extends beyond academic support, urging them to foster good manners, hygiene, and health awareness in their children.

Following her address, the celebration continued with Tibetan cultural songs and traditional dances performed by Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School students, from kindergarten to class 3. The performances were followed by lunch, served to all the students and attendees.

At the conclusion of the event, Passang Tsering, the school’s teacher, delivered the final remarks, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to everyone present at the 19th Anniversary celebration of Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School.

Founded on 10 October 2005 under the leadership of the Central Tibetan Administration, the model school was established with a vision to integrate traditional Tibetan education with modern methodologies. This unique blend is aimed at preserving Tibetan language, culture, and Buddhist values while equipping students with contemporary skills.
