In-service Training for Tibetan Teachers Starts at NCERT

A 21-day intensive English Language Teaching Workshop for Primary Teachers of Tibetan schools kicked off at the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), New Delhi on May 8, 2013. This in-service training is being organized by the Department of Education, CTA, in collaboration with the NCERT’s Department of Education in Languages (DEL). NCERT is the apex resource organization in India and is responsible for assisting and advising the Central and State Governments on academic matters related to school education.

 

The workshop was inaugurated by the Director of NCERT, Prof. Parveen Sinclair, who stressed the importance of language as a vehicle for understanding, and urged teachers to establish a link between the language and the child’s background. The inaugural session was also attended by Prof. Raja Ram Sharma, Joint Director of CIET, Prof. Hukum Singh, Dean (Academic), NCERT, Prof.

Chandra Sadayat, the Head of DEL and other faculty members of the DEL. The DoE Education Officers, Mr. Tsering Phuntsok and Mr. Kalsang Wangdu also attended the said function.

 

The workshop is attended by 29 primary-level English teachers from various Tibetan

schools under the Tibetan Children’s Village, Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society, Tibetan Homes Foundation, Snow Lion Foundation (Nepal), and others.

The main aim of the workshop is to foster professional development and

 

upgrade the pedagogical

practices of teachers pertaining to English language teaching in Tibetan schools. This workshop will address issues related with language curriculum, pedagogy, evaluation, and teaching of various aspects of English language such as reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.

 

The workshop will conclude on May 28, 2013 and is funded by the USAID through The Tibet Fund.
