Reading Skills Workshop for the Primary Schools’ Heads & Tibetan Teachers concludes successfully

A 3-day Reading Skills Workshop for the Primary Schools’ Heads & Tibetan Teachers organized by the Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration concludes successfully on 21 June, 2024. The workshop was held at CHTS, Sarah from 19 – 21 June with the total 30 participants consisting of  8 Primary Schools’ Heads & 22 Primary Tibetan Teachers.

The Principal & Vice Principal of CHTS, Sarah graciously attended the inauguration & closing ceremony of the 3-day workshop.

This workshop is adapted from the Reading Helpers Program, specifically to help those students who struggles in reading Tibetan at the Primary level. Through this workshop, participants are encouraged to learn and extend reading support to student on one-on-one in a structured yet enjoyable environment. Participants were introduced to a range of reading strategies & activities by first identifying the student who need help and then apply the strategies to individual students or in small groups to improve their reading.

Some of the activities carried out in this workshop are:

  • Shared reading
  • Reading improvement through audio book followed by Bingo game
  • Promotion of Read Aloud
  • Reading through dominos game
  • Guided drawing
  • Reading through scanning of newspaper or story book
  • Introduction of wide range of children’s literature
  • Resource person’s talk on the strategies of improving reading skills through activities by TCV Tibetan Mentors, Mingchung & Ngawang Jinpa.
  • Resource Person’s talk on how to teach reading to students by Passang Tsering, Tibetan teacher of STS Peteon.
  • Meeting and Q & A with DoE’s children’s literature author (Tseing Palzom), Phayul Sheje Bangzoe’s editor (Choenyi Dolma) & Tibetan Textbook editor (Tenzin Pal).

The participants are presented with a set of children’s books and flex charts for vocabulary activities to encourage them to read children’s story books and to do more activities with students.

The participants are given the post-workshop assignment to identify students with reading difficulties from their school and apply the strategies learned from this workshop. In July, the participants will give online presentation of their assignment and share it with the rest of participants.

The 3-day workshop is facilitated & coordinated by Sonam Gangsang from the Department of Education with the support of 3 mentors; Tenzin Dolma, a.k.a Donlha from STS Mewoen Tsuglag Peteon School, Dawa Tsamchoe from TCV Chauntra & Phuntsok Dolker from TCV Lower.
