DHARAMSHALA: The Department of Education (DoE) of the Central Tibetan Administration today started a workshop entitled  ‘Summer Science Teaching Program’ at the College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah. 13 Tibetan students pursuing science in Indian and overseas universities have enrolled in this year’s Summer Science Teaching Program.

Mr. Ngodup Tsering, Secretary of DoE, was the chief guest for the inaugural function of the 2-day workshop. Talking about the below par performance of Tibetan children in Science, he pointed out that only about 20% of the class 10 graduates from Tibetan schools opt for science stream. He encouraged the college-going science students to aim high and pursue specialization in the field of science. He also mentioned about the shortage of science teachers in Tibetan schools and urged science students in colleges and universities to see teaching (in our schools) as an invaluable opportunity to serve our community.

The chief resource persons for the workshop are Tsering Samdup and  Gyal

tsen, Education Officers, DoE, Choephel Lungtok, Textbook Editor, DoE and Tenzin Jamyang, Science Teacher, Upper TCV School. Topics such as Basic Education Policy, Learning, Memory, and Effective Teaching of Science will be covered in the workshop.

Summer Science Teaching Program provides opportunity for university students (pursuing science) to teach for a month in Tibetan schools during their summer vacation.

The main objectives of the program are; to inspire university students to pursue teaching as their career, to provide role model and guidance for children in our schools, and to offer opportunity for the college and university students to engage in voluntary community work.

The participants of Summer Science Teaching Program-2013 will start their one month teaching stint after completing the 2-day workshop at Sarah.
