Bengaluru: From February 26th to March 1st, 2024, the Counseling Section of the Department of Education, CTA, organised a five-day training on art therapy for school counselors at the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education (DLIHE) in Bengaluru. The objective of the training was to provide a strong foundation in both the theory and practice of art therapy, with an emphasis on its potential to help with personal growth, foster insight, and resolve inner conflicts across all age groups. Additionally, the training aimed to offer counselors an opportunity to refine their counseling skills through the innovative approach of art therapy.
The event began with Mr. Jamyang Wangyal, Chief Counselor of the Department of Education, emphasising the objectives of the training and urging all counselors to actively engage in the forthcoming five-day program. Following this, Mr. Jigme Tsultrim, Chief Representative Officer in Bengaluru, along with the Principal and Registrar of DLIHE, spoke on the importance of the counselor’s role in shaping students’ lives. They emphasized the need for self-awareness and effective listening skills. The ceremony concluded with heartfelt thanks from Counselor Mr. Tenzin Choedhen, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, Resource Person, and the participants.
There were 24 participants from Tibetan Children’s Village, Tibetan Homes Foundation, and Sambhota Tibetan School Society. This inclusivity added depth to the discussions and facilitated the exchange of ideas and experiences among peers.
Over the course of the training, participants explored a variety of topics, including the historical evolution of art therapy, distinguishing it from conventional art education, and understanding its broad scope and applications. Dr. Asha Sidd, the founder of Circle of Hope in Bangalore, led the sessions in exploring and implementing a range of effective therapeutic approaches and techniques. With a focus on self-expression, stress management, anxiety, and group dynamics, attendees gained invaluable insights into the transformative power of art therapy.
Dr. Tenzin Passang, Principal of the Dalai Lama Institute for Higher Education, as the chief guest, attended the closing ceremony along with the registrar. Dr. Passang thanked the counseling section of the Department of Education for organising the training at their institution and urged the counselors to practically apply the knowledge in their respective school environments. He expressed confidence in their ability to excel in their roles, empowered by the tools and insights gained from the art therapy training.
The art therapy training for school counselors at DLIHE proved to be a transformative experience, enriching participants with valuable skills and perspectives to enhance their counseling practice.
