Workshop on Enabling Students’ Safety & Security for School Headmasters/mistresses is Underway

Dharamshala: The Department of Education, CTA has organised a webinar based workshop on Students’ Safety & Security in Tibetan Schools for the School Headmasters/mistresses from 30 August to 1 September, 2022. 

Two-day workshop on Students’ Safety & Security in Tibetan Schools for the School Headmasters and headmistresses.

The three-day workshop is a part of in-service training series that helps Education Department to revisit schools’ safety & security goals as well as update new administrators. 

The team from Expressions India, an NGO located in Delhi that focuses on Adolescents’ Mental Health & Well being is facilitating this workshop. The NGO is headed by Dr. Jitendar Nagpal, Psychiatrist and head of the Department of Psychiatry, Moolchand Hospital, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi is one of the prime Psychological Consultant to all programs on mental health to the Government of India and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). 

During the course of this workshop, the participants will learn the whole school safety approach from both humanistic and developmental approach, identifying root causes of behaviour problems/bullying/cyber bullying/aggression/self-harm/suicide and understanding red flags for intervention & referral for appropriate services. Zero tolerance policy to violence in schools were reinforced and appealed to the participants to educate the teachers and students on cyber bullying, cyber etiquettes, cyber law, cyber safety so that we empower and enable the students to make informed decisions. Alternate positive discipline techniques were discussed at length since corporal punishment is banned in schools. Educative videos were also used to help understand application of the concepts during the workshop. 

Through the process of the workshop, the organisers learned the gap that exists in setting clear developmentally appropriate boundaries and expectations that help as a direction or guide for the students what to do and what not to do while in school or after school. 

The participants were actively involved and candidly shared their experiences which spoke that they really care about safety of students under their care. 

36 Headmasters/mistresses from 4 school systems (Tibetan Children’s Village/Tibetan Homes Foundation/Snow Lion Foundation (Nepal)/Sambhota Tibetan School Society) participated in this workshop funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC).

The similar workshop was provided to School Principals from 22 – 24 August, 2022.
